Mexico Coins

Onza Libertad

In 1981 the obverse side of the coins was to bear the national coat of arms and the reverse side was to have the same design as the Centenario, i.e. the Winged Victory with the Popocatépetl and Ixtaccíhuatl volcanoes on the background. An ounce of gold was considered for silver coins; the intention being to substitute the silver coin prevailing in the market known as Troy Ounce as well as to even it up with the gold pieces. This new coin was issued by Government Decree, has the face value and the National coat of arms. In 1991 the following silver coins were added: 1/2, 1/4 , 1/10 and 1/20 oz.
